New ASTM Standard Consolidates Structural Fastener-The 16th China(Guangzhou)Int’l Fastener & Equipment Exhibition Specifications
3/17/2015  fastener expo

A new ASTM standard consolidates six current standards on structural fasteners. With hundreds of millions of fasteners produced to ASTM specifications each year, industry will benefit from the streamlined approach provided by the new ASTM standard (F3125: Specification for High Strength Structural Bolts, Steel and Alloy Steel, Heat Treated, 120 ksi (830 MPa) and150 ksi (1040 MPa) Minimum Tensile Strength, Inch and Metric Dimensions).

Structural fasteners are an essential construction element, used to hold many types of steel structures together, from high-rise construction and retail space to airport terminals and sports facilities.

The six standards on structural fasteners that have been consolidated into ASTM F3125 are: • ASTM A325 and ASTM A325M, specifications for steel heat-treated structural bolts; • ASTM A490 and ASTM A490M, specifications for steel alloy heat-treated structural bolts; and • ASTM F1852 and ASTM F2280, specifications for “twist off” type tension control structural bolt/nut/washer assemblies.

ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners discussed the proposal to consolidate these standards with the leadership of the American Institute of Steel Construction and the Research Council on Structural Connections.

This process clarified industry needs and provided valuable feedback. “This is an example of what can happen when fresh perspectives, cooperation and effort combine,” says Chad Larson, president, LeJeune Bolt Co., and chairman of ASTM’s Subcommittee on Steel Bolts, Nuts and Rivets.

“The new standard maintains virtually all of the previous technical requirements and adds much needed changes in a very efficient manner.” Fastener manufacturers, structural engineers and steel construction agencies will benefit from the streamlined standard.

In addition, Larson says that all interested parties are welcome to participate in the ongoing maintenance of F3125 through the subcommittee’s work. To purchase this and other standards, visit www.astm.org and search by the standard designation, or contact ASTM Customer Relations (tel +1.877.909.ASTM; sales@astm.org).
