Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., the largest nickel smelter in Japan, said that the global nickel market might face a supply shortage of 49,000 tons in 2019. The figure was almost half of shortage of 93,000 tons this year because global suppliers increased production of raw nickel and the output of Indonesian low-grade nickel pig iron (NPI) was also increased.
The company said that global demand for nickel in 2019 was expected to rise by 3.4 % from this year to 2.34 million tons toughly, while supply was expected to hike by 5.5 % to 2.3 million tons roughly.
