Stainless UK Helps Beat Corrosion on River Plym Viaduct--The 15th China(Guangzhou)Int'l Stainless Steel Industry Exhibition

Stainless UK has supplied stainless steel reinforcing bar and stainless steel reinforcing mesh panels to contractor BAM Nuttall for use on refurbishment work to the River Plym Viaduct on the Great Western Main Line at Plympton in Devon.
The section of line forms part of the Network Rail trunk line between London Paddington and Penzance. Originally opened in 1848 as part of the South Devon and Tavistock Railway, the viaduct carries the line over the River Plym and on under the Marsh Mills viaduct which forms part of the modern A38 dual carriageway.
The River Plym is a tidal river and the action of the tide combined with weathering over the past 150 year has caused the need for refurbishment work to four of the viaducts stone piers. The piers have been covered front and back with a combination of marine grade 316 stainless steel fabricated mesh panels and reinforcing bar. This was then covered in 80mm thick marine grade in situ concrete to provide long term protection to the viaduct piers from the elements.
“In situations like this where reinforcement is required beneath concrete, marine grade stainless steel is essential to provide long term resistance to corrosion, thereby reducing maintenance costs in the future”, said Tim Wells, managing director of Stainless UK.
